Sometimes, all we need to do to find inspiration is to go back into our memories, take the biggest shovel we can find and dig deep until the pure treasure of a childhood memory comes onto the surface. That's what happened with an idea for my first graphic novel. I have been kicking around a concept of a graphic novel starring my five year old daughter and our gigantic Newfoundland dog as the main characters (as always, they are my main sources of inspiration), however nothing got me excited enough to create illustrations, until recently. I was sitting at the SCBWI WWA conference, listening to a speaker, and I saw a flash of memory in front of my eyes. Peach color sharpei dog without a collar. My heart started pounding hard, my pupils dilated, my hand grabbed a pencil and started jotting down: "Peach graphic novel." You see, when I was a kid, I found a stray dog, and the events that followed would make you both laugh and tear up. The story is sweet and sad, thoughtful and funny, and full of heartfelt compassion and love.

I was very fortunate to be mentored by Amy Hevron during the creation of the first three spreads for the "Peach" project. Amy has this wonderful ability to see required edits right away and provide gentle guidance and advice.

I  caught My inspiration by the sleeve

"The Mountain"

book project!

I was driving in my car one day, and I asked God for inspiration or idea for my next book project. The next day, when I was driving home after dropping off my daughter at preschool, I saw a man crossing the street. The man had the most charismatic facial hair that one could imagine. His long wavy gray hair was rolling down onto his shoulders in majestic waves, his mustache and beard were stunning, his eye brows framing his eyes full of wisdom. I was watching him as if in slow motion, I had the same feeling when I watch a butterfly fly by. It was that feeling that made me pull over, jump out of my car, and run to catch up with him. Out of breath, I asked him if I could please take a photo of him as an inspiration for my next book, explaining that I was an Author-Illustrator of children's books. I had no idea at that moment what that book was going to be about, but I knew with an absolute certainty that he was going to be in it. He seemed to be flattered and even posed for a couple of pictures. I was so happy and thankful to him. He said that he had not groomed his mustache and beard that day, and I replied that he looked absolutely perfect. We exchanged numbers, and I sent him his photos and promised to keep him posted.

Later, a sketch for the first illustration came to me, which was followed by a hike to Mt. Rainier. Eventually, I started hearing the text of the book in my head, and so I sat down and wrote it down. There were countless rounds of edits (I did not think much of myself as a writer at that time, even though it was my third children's book project), but with each revision it got better and better, until finally it became what it was meant to be and evoked the feeling that I felt inside. Six months went by, and I created two color spreads. Another six months went by, and I created a full book dummy. It has been an amazing journey on which I discovered and started truly believing in myself as a writer. My illustrations got stronger too, as I was being mentored by Amy Hevron who gave me great advice and pointed out edits.

Do you ever find yourself getting a brilliant idea, so delicious you can almost taste it on the tip of your tongue, but as hard as you try to formulate it, wouldn't take any particular shape? And then, one morning a magical thing happens - it snows in Seattle, and the snow sticks and does not melt for hours, and you take your family outside to play in the snow with tiny fluffy pure white crystals glistening in the soft pinks and yellows of the sunrise. You and your family are goofing around, when you suddenly realize that you have been given a powerful gift of inspiration...and you feel that a book has just been born.

That's exactly what happened to me last December! I'm normally not the type who waits for the inspiration to come. Usually, I summon it with daily hard work and persistence. And as all good friends do, my inspiration comes with delicious cookies in tow for us to have with some tea, and we have a blast!

The book dummy was created from scratch to finish in Procreate App on iPad Pro using Apple pencil. I'm tempted to fly out to Australia to give the creators of the Procreate App a personal hug to express how much I have enjoyed the illustrating process and how much more flexibility I have had thanks to it.

The book dummy has been presented at the 18th Annual Winter Conference of Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators in New York this year.

Rainbow Colors book by Tamara Hergert

Yes, I've written and illustrated a book dummy! "Rainbow Colors" is designed to be a board book shaped as a rainbow when it's opened up. Illustrating children's books is my passion, and I feel like I have grown a lot as an illustrator thanks to this dummy book. I worked on it in my spare time and poured all my heart and soul in its creation. It's inspired by all the love, joy, colors and laughter that our daughter Lily brings into mine and my husband's lives.

The book dummy was designed by my dear and cherished friend Andrei Penkin (Thank you Andrei, this dummy book has become possible only because of you).

The dummy book has been presented at the 45th Annual Conference of Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators in Los Angeles this year, so we'll see what happens :)
